Father Lopez freshman earns his Eagle

Marc Zboch, a 15-year-old freshman at Father Lopez Catholic High School, earned his Eagle Scout ranking last month. His troop, Troop 468, led by Scoutmaster Dan Wills and chartered by First United Methodist Church, has been active locally for 53 years.

For his Eagle Project, Zboch worked with the Daytona Outreach Center, to help homeless residents.

Holocaust survivor to speak at temple

In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Jewish Federation of Volusia-Flagler will host survivor Claire Soria 7 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at Congregation B’Nai Torah, 403 N. Nova Road.

When Soria was 5 years old in 1940, she was hidden by a poor gentile neighbor, after Nazi soldiers occupied Brussels and it became clear that Jewish children were no longer safe with their families. Her mother fled to an aunt’s home, and Soria has since discovered her name in an Auschwitz ledger.

She also discovered that her father was part of the resistance, smuggling weapons to the allies.

She speaks about the Holocaust to local school children and has been a guest speaker at the Holocaust Memorial Center, in Maitland.
