Local girls participated in the Volusia County Girls on the Run 5K Saturday morning.

Ormond Beach girls are on the run.

The Volusia County Girls on the Run 5K is held twice a year with a goal of truly empowering girls with a sense of self-awareness and self-achievement. Held at Father Lopez Catholic High School, the event is a culmination of a 12 week, 24 lesson curriculum that covers topics like healthily habits, anti-bullying, and dealing with social media pressure.

"The event is not a race," Debye Gotsch said. "Run, walk or skip, everyone of them is a winner. We hope that it has truly empowered the girls with a sense of self-awareness and self- achievement. We want them learn the importance of team work and giving back."
