Students volunteer their summer time to clean up city parks; the city's public works fleet named in the nation's top 100; and, city workers prep for emergencies.

BY THE OBSERVER STAFF

Each morning, Campus Outreach Program students meet at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center for a briefing on their day’s assignments. Last week, these volunteers helped fill in seawall wash-outs at Riviera Park, clean the picnic area at Andy Romano Beachfront Park and clear the underbrush at Vadner Park.

The workers also helped load about 40 coquina rocks from the new gazebo site at The Casements, as well as power-wash the Sanchez Park tower.

City fleet named top in nation

Ormond Beach’s fleet operation, of the Public Works Department, was named one of the best fleets in the county, ranking 94 out of 100.

The award was accepted by Fleet Manager Facundo Tassara last week, in Texas. About 38,000 government organizations are eligible to apply for the ranking.

In case of emergency, train

Ormond Beach Police Officer Keith Feder, Lt. Jesse Godfrey, Fire Chief Bob Mandarino and Grants Coordinator/Public Information Officer Loretta Moisio attended the Volusia County Integrated Emergency Management Course June 10-14, in Maryland, to design a city emergency plan that aligns with national standards.

The training was specifically planned for emergency events occurring in Volusia County and included a variety of speakers and an exercise in preparing for and presenting a news conference. The training culminated in an active-shooter scenario, and a mock emergency operations center was activated and manned.
