Marine center to release turtle trio

The Volusia County Marine Science Center rehabilitation team will release three loggerhead sea turtles 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, in Ponce Inlet — weather permitting.

One of the turtles to be released, Zee, is a large sub-adult loggerhead that was stranded May 1 at the jetty in Ponce de Leon Inlet. Zee washed ashore underweight, dehydrated and anemic, with its shell covered in barnacles and algae, which indicated that it had been debilitated and floating at sea for an extended period.

During rehabilitation, Zee gained nearly 18 pounds and now weighs 131 pounds.

Seymour is a juvenile loggerhead that was caught on a fisherman’s hook May 9. Beach patrollers rescued the turtle, which was covered in barnacles and floating near the shore. During rehabilitation, Seymour gained nearly eight pounds and now weighs 55 pounds.

Parker is a sub-adult loggerhead that was found stranded in New Smyrna Beach with a fishing hook in its mouth. The turtle also was dehydrated and anemic. During rehabilitation, Parker gained nearly five pounds and now weighs almost 85 pounds.

The Marine Science Center has cared for more than 900 juvenile and adult sea turtles, more than 15,000 hatchlings and washbacks, and more than 1,000 gopher tortoises, freshwater turtles and snakes turtles since opening in 2002.

Eagles award scholarships to two locals

The Ormond by the Sea Eagles 4435 Ladies Auxiliary awarded five $500 scholarships last week, two of which went to Ormond Beach's Burgunday Haughton and Kyle Flynn.

The other three award-winners were from Tallahassee and Vermont.
