Ormond student awarded $2,5000

Of 14 total scholarships awarded this year through Fifth Third Bank, Ormond Beach’s Cheyenna Espinoza received $2,500 to advance her education.

Since 2005, the Fifth Third Foundation has annually awarded scholarships to children of Fifth Third employees. It has awarded more than 150 scholarships totaling more than $400,000 since its inception. Espinosa’s mother, Eva, is a bank employee.

“The Bank’s scholarship program has enabled us to contribute nearly $400,000 to students and their families since the program’s inception,” said Heidi Jark, vice president and managing director of the Fifth Third Foundation. “I wish this latest class of scholars the best of luck and continued success as they begin college.”

Tillandsia Garden Club helps DSC student advance

The Tillandsia Garden Club’s 2012-2013 recipient of its $1,000 Daytona State College environmental science grant is Kristine Peterson. After graduation, Peterson plans to study Environmental Science at Stetson University.

The garden club also sponsors two scholarships for high school students attending the SEEK (Save the Earth's Environment through Knowledge) summer camp, which is an environmental conference sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.

Help a local get her product into Walmart

Ormond Beach resident Shirley James’ U Go Girl Activity Cards product line has made it past the first round of Wal-Mart’s “Get On The Shelf!” contest, which gives small businesses a chance to feature their goods in Wal-Mart stores.

But now, in the competition’s audition round, it’s up to online voting, which started Aug. 6 and ends Sept. 2, to push James’ item further along.

With one vote per day allowed from users, the amount of public support a product garnishes works to show judges its potential commercial viability.

Casements Camera Club goes underwater

At the Casements Camera Club’s Aug. 22 meeting, Tracy Grubbs, owner of Spruce Creek Scuba, in Port Orange, will give a presentation on underwater photography. The club meets at Bailey Riverbridge Gardens Park, 1 N. Beach St.

Ans Van Beek has also temporarily taken over the club’s publicity chair, following the resignation of Lloyd Hampson. Club elections are in November.

Biketoberfest is coming: Get your pet involved!

In preparation of the 21st-annual Biketoberfest, the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is asking for residents to send in photos of their biker pets, positioned on or around a bike, or decked out in biker gear, for a chance to win three Daytona Beach getaways.

The grand prize is a four-day, three-night stay at the Shores Resort & Spa.

The promotion, called Tails & Tailpipes, is accepting photos on its Facebook page through Sept. 15. Voting will open Sept. 16 and end Oct. 10. Search “Bikertoberfest” on Facebook.

Two Facebook voters will also have a chance to a vacation package.
