Two Volusia County School Board members — one incumbent and one new — took their oath of office on Tuesday, Nov. 17, marking the beginning of their four-year term on the board.
Newly-elected Anita Burnette will represent District 2 after winning the November election against incumbent Ida Wright. School Board Member Carl Persis, who was re-elected without opposition, will continue to represent District 4.
The oath of office was administered by Circuit Judge Sandra Upchurch during the board's annual organization session, where District 3 School Board member Linda Cuthbert was elected board chair, according to a press release by Volusia County Schools. District 1 School Board member Jamie Haynes was elected vice chair. They both will serve one year in their positions.
Burnette's district includes the greater Daytona Beach area, Daytona Beach Shores, Ponce Inlet, South Daytona and a portion of Port Orange. She is an alumna of Mainland High School, and worked at Halifax Health for 29 years. She has lived in Port Orange since 1996 with her husband Don Burnette, who is also the mayor of Port Orange.
Persis has served on the School Board since 2016 representing District 4, which includes Holly Hill, Ormond Beach, Ormond-by-the-Sea, the northwest section of Daytona Beach and the area surrounding DeLeon Springs. He is an alumnus of Seabreeze High School and was a Volusia County Schools principal for 27 years. He is a former Ormond Beach city commissioner, mayor and also served on the Volusia County Council.
“The leadership team looks forward to working with our new board member and re-elected board member for the next four years,” said Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin in the press release.
