PHD Weight Loss, a clinic that promises to offer a simple and unique approach to dropping pounds, is set to open Oct. 16 at 1275 W. Granada Ave, Suite 6A. The owners are Jayde Smith, a certified health consultant, and her husband Kevin, a certified public accountant who graduated from Flagler Palm Coast High School in 2007.

“We decided on Ormond Beach because my husband, Kevin, was born and raised in nearby Flagler Beach,” said Jayde Smith. “I love this area, and I'm passionate about the community — this is where we want to raise our family.”

She said the clinic will offer individualized weight loss coaching.

The program does not involve medications, fad-dieting, supplements or severe caloric restriction. She considers the program unique because it tackles behavioral and mental aspects of weight loss through weekly counseling sessions, which deal with behavioral problems such as binge dieting, cravings and emotional overeating. A customized meal plan is developed, but no foods are sold.

“We help people get to the optimal body composition,” Smith said. “Everybody has different needs.”

The goal is to make any necessary lifestyle changes so the weight loss is permanent.

Exercise is not part of the program.

“We love exercise. It’s a great health and wellness tool,” she said. “But it’s not effective for weight loss. We don’t have an exercise component.”

The "PHD" in their name stands for "Performance" "Health" "Diet." The company was started by Jayde’s sister, Dr. Ashley Lucas. Jayde worked in the original clinic in Durango, Colorado, and helped her sister open a second clinic in Farmington, North Carolina. A third is planned for Asheville, North Carolina.

After a long time of planning, the Smiths are ready to open their own business.

“It’s stressful and takes a lot of work but it’s worth it when you’re pursuing your dreams,” she said. “It’s pretty darn amazing.”

For every pound lost by clients, a dollar will be donated to local charities. For example, patients at the clinic’s Durango and Farmington locations recently dropped a combined 1,315 pounds and PHD Weight Loss donated $1,315 to Feeding America.

“Our mission is to help people attain their health goals while also giving back to our local community,” she said.

Smith has seen some amazing changes at the clinics, she said, such as people who have type 2 diabetes or problems with blood pressure or cholesterol being able to reduce their medication after entering the program.

Call 238-9222, or find them at www.MyPHDWeightLoss.com or on Facebook at PHDWeightLossOrmondBeach. They will be open daily except Sunday and Monday.

“We help people get to the optimal body composition.”
