Located by a sonar-equipped boat, a car confirmed to belong to 79-year-old Rose Bruce, who was reported missing Monday, Sept. 24, was found by law-enforcement personnel from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office said there was an unidentified body in the vehicle, and after removing the car from the pond, said it was an adult female, but couldn't give a positive identification until the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy.
The incident was determined to be a traffic accident and will be investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Sheriff's Office said there were no signs of foul play.
The submerged vehicle was located in a pond on the corner of Hand Avenue and Williamson Boulevard, next to Whole Foods Market. It is to be extracted from the pond for further evaluation and investigation, by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office’s Dive Team.
Bruce was last seen leaving work at Wal-Mart 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, and was supposed to return an hour later to pick up her daughter-in-law, who also works there.
When Bruce didn’t show up, her daughter-in-law walked home to their apartment and discovered the fire alarm sounding and smoke coming from the oven, where dinner was burning.
