An Orlando man attacked his ex-girlfriend at a hotel in Ormond Beach before stealing her car and fleeing.

Melvin D. Scott, 30, asked his ex-girlfriend to bring some of his old clothes to the Scottish Inn, 1608 N. U.S. 1, Jan. 28, and convinced her to help bring them up to the room he was staying in.

Once in the room, his ex-girlfriend told police he immediately “attacked her, shoving her back toward the bathroom and putting his hands around her throat attempting to choke her.”

The victim told police he also had a piece of plastic, similar to a plastic bag, over her mouth. She told police she was able to fight him off and run to a nearby room to call police. According to the report, this is when Scott left the hotel and took her vehicle, which was registered to her father.

While the victim said she didn’t see Scott leave the hotel, she told police he could likely be headed back to Orlando.

The victim’s car was recovered by police in Orlando. As of Jan. 29, the Orlando police department hadn’t arrested Scott.

The victim told police her cell phone, purse and keys were in the vehicle because she hadn’t planned on helping Scott bring items inside, but agreed to since he wasn’t initially being rude or aggressive.

While Scott and the victim hadn’t lived together in the past, according to the police report, there was an active protection order in reference to domestic violence. Despite the order, the victim told police she and Scott had been communicating through calls and text messages.

According to the report, the victim had minor scratches and redness but refused medical treatment.

Scott was previously arrested in Orange County on charges of trafficking in cocaine and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon.
