Supermarket struggle

3:31 p.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard

Petit theft. Police arrested a 61-year-old Ormond Beach woman who stole $46 worth of merchandise from a local supermarket, primarily clothing pieces, by wearing them over her regular clothes.

According to her arrest report, the woman was wearing a pair of unpaid shorts and an unpaid mask. While at the self-checkout area, she also neglected to pay for a large outdoor owl decoration. When police arrived on the scene, the woman was arguing with the store's loss prevention officer, saying that she realized she hadn't paid for the merchandise and was going to do so.

The woman told police that she had forgotten to pay for the items because she was on new medication. She argued that she never crossed the front doors of the building, even though surveillance footage showed her doing so.

When police tried to arrest her, the woman resisted and the officer forced her to the wall in order to get her in handcuffs. The woman said, "I am not going to jail, you're going to have to kill me," according to the police report. During the struggle, the woman grabbed the officer's firearm holster. The woman received a small abrasion on her left forearm because of being pushed up against the wall, and was transported to the hospital for medical clearance.

Then, she was taken to jail.

Suspicious incident. A 41-year-old Port Orange man frequenting a cafe called police after he overheard a suspicious conversation happening a few feet away from him.

The incident report details that the suspicious person, described as a white man in his mid-20s to mid-30s, was talking on the phone in an "Eastern European or Russian-sounding accent" using a headset. The conversation entailed the suspicious person seemingly guiding a person on how to impersonate a UPS or delivery man to burglarize a house, including statements like "bring a screwdriver or something and make sure it's sharp," according to the report. The suspicious man then spoke about "tranquilizing" the homeowner so they don't "put up a fight," the Port Orange man told police.

The officer created a "be on the lookout" advisory which included photos of the suspicious man.
