Military, police, teachers and others can get discounts.

Parades and ceremonies on Memorial Day and June 6, the anniversary of D-Day, pay tribute each year to the nation’s military veterans.

This year, members of the armed forces and other “hometown heroes,” including, fire, police, educators and health care workers, can learn about a new program that was started in their honor to help them achieve the American Dream, home ownership.

A Homes for Heroes Ribbon Cutting event is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on June 6 at Coldwell Banker Premier Properties, 380 S. Atlantic Ave. The Homes for Heroes program offers savings to “local community heroes” when buying, selling or refinancing a home. The event offers a chance for those who qualify to learn about the program.

There will be hors d’oeuvres, entertainment and prizes.

Paige Brewer, of Coldwell Banker, and Lisa Blythe of Southern Title, are registered affiliates with the national Homes for Heroes organization. Realtors offer discounted commissions, and Southern Title waives the closing fee, for those who qualify for the program. The Web site, homesforheroes.com, has a complete list of businesses that offer discounts.

“It’s a way to give back,” said Blythe. “There are not a lot of programs that do this much to help others. My dad and brother were both in the service.”

Homes for Heroes was created by a group of Minnesota business owners after the events of Sept. 11, 2001, as a way of saying “thank you” to those who give up so much for us on a daily basis, according to information provided by Southern Title. The non-profit company affiliates with Realtors, lenders and other real estate-related companies to offer rebates and discounts. There are currently 1,300 Affiliates in 48 states that have provided $5 million in buying, selling or refinancing a home.

Brewer said the program is just “getting up and going” in this area.

Michelle Harmon, a local nurse, moved to the area recently and worked with Brewer to get discounts on home buying.

“It’s taking care of my homeowner’s insurance for a whole year,” she said. “I think it’s wonderful. I recommend it to anybody.”
