A rabies alert was issued on Nov. 20 for Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach by the Florida Dept. of Health in Volusia County in response to two raccoons and one cat that tested positive in the past two months. The cat was found in the parking lot of The Trails Shopping Center on North Nova Road. Anyone who has been in contact with a stray cat in that area from Nov. 2 to Nov. 12 should contact the department.

The alert is for 60 days for all Volusia County areas east of Interstate 95.

All domestic animals should be vaccinated and all wildlife contact should be avoided.

If a pet is bitten by a wild animal, a person should seek veterinary assistance immediately and contact local animal control services. A person who is bit should seek medical attention and report the injury to the department at 274-5000 or after hours at 316-5030.
