Records were broken Saturday, as more than $12,000 dollars was raised in the fourth-annual Grassroots Giving Run for Hope 5K.

Grassroots Giving, local nonprofit that pays for extracurricular activities for children, hosted its biggest fundraising event of the year at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona Coca -Cola Pavilion. Missy Gibson, the founder and president of Grassroots said this year's run brought in a record number of sponsors.

"We've had more sponsorship this year then any year we've ever done," Gibson said. "We were able to generate quite a bit of money that way."

Gibson said she was surprised to see so many children in the 110 or so runners who participated.

"They seem to find it enjoyable," said Gibson. "Because it's very different. You're just not running on pavement for 3.1 miles."

Volunteers from Spruce Creek High School and WyoTech Daytona came out to help. Gibson said the help made it so the run was organized and the runners were pleased with the changes made to the course.

"One of the things that just really warms my heart is, we have a lot of folks that come out and support us. A lot come back every year to support us and enjoy the off-road course because they say it's unique and unusual. There are so many 5K races here locally, so this is something very different."
