The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach recently completed its quarterly Adopt-A-Highway program cleanup of Granada Boulevard, between U.S. 1 and Nova Road.
A dozen Rotary Club members and friends attended the session, collecting about eight large bags of trash, a press release states. Each quarter, the group said it finds less trash. The Volusia County Chamber Alliance is partnering with Volusia County to distribute personal protective equipment kits to local businesses, and the distribution in Ormond Beach is scheduled for Thursday, July 9.
The kits will be distributed at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, located at 399 N. U.S. 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To obtain a kit — which will contain items like masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, paper towels and cleaning products — businesses must present a business card indicating they are located in Volusia and sign that they received the kit. Each business can obtain up to two kits, a press release states.
Here are the other locations that will begin distributing kits on Monday, July 6.
Funding for the kits was made possible via the county's coronavirus relief funds.
Gov. Ron DeSantis held a press conference at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach on Wednesday, July 1, to highlight the $17 million in recurring funding he approved for the historically Black college.
The announcement came before the 145th anniversary of Mary McLeod Bethune's birthday, which will be celebrated on July 10, according to a press release. DeSantis is providing over $123 million in funding to historically Black colleges and universities in the state in the coming fiscal year.
“I was proud to be at Bethune-Cookman University today to announce major investments for Florida’s Historically Black Colleges Universities," DeSantis said in the press release. "HBCUs play an important role in Florida’s educational fabric and continue to be trailblazers for innovation, talent, and leadership. This funding will provide students additional opportunities and will continue to transform higher education in Florida, especially for Black students across the state to meet the demands of the 21st century.”
The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce announced its recipients of the Rob Ridder Scholarship Fund on Wednesday, July 1.
Chamber of Commerce CEO Debbie Cotton and the chamber's advisory board members conducted virtual interviews with candidates to make its final selections, a press release states. Each of the recipients will be awarded $1,000 to support their college education. The recipients are as follows:
Applicants had to be a senior at a Volusia County high school, as well as the child of a parent or legal guardian who was a member of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce. Other criteria considered included community service, leadership qualities, character, integrity, initiative and financial need.
“This is the seventh year that we’ve had this program in place and it’s the first time we’ve had to find a virtual solution to make sure we had the opportunity to support graduating seniors and support our members’ families,” said Cotton in the press release. “It wasn’t easy and required a lot of coordination, but every interview was successfully completed and was a true reflection of how we can come together to bring normalcy to our community at a time when there’s been so much uncertainty.”
The scholarship fund was started in 2014 and was renamed in 2017 in memory of Rob Ridder.
