The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach recently held a special Reading Buddies program session at Ormond Beach Elementary, according to a press release.
Usually, the 14 volunteers visit OBE twice a month for 45 minutes to ready school-provided books one-on-one with third and fourth graders who need extra reading help. However, at the last session, Rotarians used one of two books developed by the Rotary Club of Fairborn, Ohio, to share the ideals of Rotary.
"In addition to literacy, Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure, teaches the 'Rotary Four-way Test,' which says : Of the things we think, say or do, 1) Is it the truth? 2) Is it fair to all concerned? 3)Will it build goodwill and better friendships? [and] 4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" a press release states.
Rotarian Joyce Pepin also made apple dumplings for the students, whose homeroom were presented with "Four-way Test" banners.

Pine Trail Elementary School will be conducting its first-ever holiday food drive.
All donations will benefit the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian's aftermath. To participate, students will donate non-perishable foods to their classrooms, a press release states. The students' goal this year is to have every student from each class participate to receive a complimentary pizza party from Bronx House Pizza in Ormond Beach.
“While watching the news every day, we see the struggles many people have with providing for their basic needs," Bronx House Pizza owner Bruno DiFabio said in a press release. "We are blessed to be able to contribute to the families and the communities in any way we can. Each time we serve we help so many people who are in need."

Ormond Beach country singer Kaleb Lee's new single "I Dream In Southern," featuring Kelly Clarkson, is now available.
The song was written by songwriters Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne and Brandy Clarke, and is an "ode to all things southern including blue jeans, back porches, cotton fields, mason jars, fireflies" and more, according to a press release. Clarkson sent the song to Lee after he finished in the Top 6 on her team while competing in Season 14 of The Voice. Lee later joined Clarkson at her "Meaning of Life" tour earlier this year in Duluth, Georgia, where he performed the song.
A press release states Clarkson "loved it so much" she added her vocals to the track.
“I Dream In Southern is such a great song written by a powerhouse team,” Lee said in the press release. “It’s just icing on the cake for Kelly to sing on it.”
Akarri Davis, of Ormond Beach, was recognized by the City Commission at its Dec. 3 meeting for receiving the State Police Athletic League Boy of the Year award.
The mayor issued a proclamation on his behalf, pointing out that Davis stood out over 45 applicants for the award. Davis graduated from Seabreeze High School in May, and had participated in the Ormond Beach Police Athletic League basketball and the Youth Leadership Council for 10 years, participating in clothing drives and school supply giveaways. While in high school, Davis participated on the football and wrestling teams.
Davis now attends Keiser University and is majoring in business administration. He will be formally recognized as the state PAL Boy of the Year in Orlando on Dec. 15.
