What better way to spend a day on the beach than to create a work of natural art with your friends? How about creating works of art with a dozen groups of friends?

That’s exactly what happened last weekend, as amateur and professional sand sculptors alike gathered Aug. 3, at Coral Sands Oceanfront Resort, 1009 Ocean Shore Blvd., for its very first Sand Sculpture Contest.

“We wanted to build awareness of local businesses and try to help the local economy,” said Ibbe Salehjee, Coral Sands’ front desk clerk.

First prize was a three-night stay at the hotel. Second prize was two nights. And third prize was one night. Other prizes were donated by local businesses and donations were accepted for the Volusia County Marine Science Center.
