The Seabreeze Special Olympics Unified Sports team got the opportunity to experience the FHSAA Final Four just like the teams who make it that far do. They took on Plant City’s Unified Sports team Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland.
For the first time in its history, FHSAA put the Special Olympics basketball on stage during its regular championship week, and the Unified Sports teams captivated the audience. Although thousands of fans from various parts of Florida made their way to the Lakeland Center to cheer on their teams, they all cheered as the Special Olympic basketball games got under way.
All the players were introduced in the pregame ceremony. They all played four full quarters and they all received medals like the championship teams.
In an interview on the Bright House Sports Network, Darrell Taylor, the Special Olympics Project Unify Manager said, “Everybody deserves to play interscholastic sports no matter your disability, no matter where you’re from, your color, creed or race. Everyone is equal and this is the first step in the right direction of creating equality across the state of Florida in sports.”
Challenger Baseball
Registration for Challenger Baseball is open and is for people with special needs from ages 8 to adult. The session begins Mar. 31, and ends May 5. It will be held on Tuesdays, from 5-6 p.m. at the Nova Community Center Fields at 440 North Nova Road.
The fee is $24 for Ormond Beach residents (proof of residency required) and $37 for non-residents. Registration takes place at the Leisure Services Department at 399 North U.S. 1 Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more info, call 676-3250.
