Security First Insurance's summer internship is helping to fill the gap while the company works to fill over 60 open positions, according to a press release.

The company's internship program is designed to attract local young talent and provide a picture of what it's like to have a career in the insurance industry. It is also designed to fill open positions in the long term.

“Many students do not have an accurate understanding of what it’s like to work in the insurance industry — they often think of the role of an insurance agent,” said Melissa Burt DeVriese, president of Security First Insurance, in the press release. “This program is strategically designed to attract talent before they begin their careers and open their eyes to the many fulfilling career opportunities available in a variety of fields, such as technology, data science, marketing, and product design."

The program runs from May to August, with many students returning during their winter break in December and January. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be accepted in to the 18-week program. Additionally, as part of their internship, the students create a community service project to support a local nonprofit; this year, the interns chose the Halifax Humane Society and organized a food and supply drive by creating a competition among Security First's nearly 400 employees.

“This is the first time I’ve worked in a corporate environment,” said Adriana Salerno, a Security First intern and new student at University of South Florida. “As part of this program, I’ve been able to develop the marketing campaign to promote our community service project internally and manage some of the company’s social media marketing. It’s been a very rewarding and fun experience so far.”

Since the program was created, 30% of the interns have been hired at Security First for full-time positions. Of those, 10% are now serving in management roles.
