The FDOT contractor working at 1628 W. Granada Boulevard broke a three-inch sewer pipe, and 2,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled out into the construction area at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16. City Utilities Manager David Ponitz said it was cleaned up and called it a minor incident.

The contractor is working on the eastbound side of West Granada Boulevard, lengthening and widening the turn lane onto southbound Interstate 95.

The accident, which happened near the Interchange Boulevard intersection, is not unusual.

“There are so many lines underground,” Ponitz said.

This type of spill has always been reported to the Department of Environmental Protection. Earlier this year, the state issued a requirement that the public be notified.

The sewage did not leave the roadway excavation area. The workers dammed up the site, and a tanker truck arrived to pump up sewage that had pooled up. The area was then disinfected with bleach and lime. It took a couple of hours for trucks to arrive and remove the spilled sewage.

No nearby businesses or privated property were affected.
