The trial of Zachary Holloway,  who was accused of shooting Ormond Beach's Ernest Minton last April, began Tuesday, with Minton and his girlfriend, Corinna Pappas, taking the stand.

Holloway is being charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, for allegedly shooting Minton April 18, 2012, at Pappas' mother’s home, 1338 Par Ave., after police say he and two others followed Minton and Pappas from a Daytona Beach Walmart.

In her testimony Tuesday morning, Pappas identified Holloway as the man who shot Minton. Both Minton and Pappas testified that a van followed their car north, from the Walmart, changing lanes and speed to match theirs.

Minton took the stand wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs. He’s currently in custody after a Feb. 6 arrest for drug trafficking. He is being charged in Osceola County.

He wasn’t initially sure if the van was following them or coincidentally heading in the same direction, Minton said, so he made a last-minute left turn, at which point the van stopped following them.

Once at her mother’s home, where the two were headed to drop off groceries, Pappas said she began unloading the car while Minton remained in the driver’s seat.

According to his testimony, a male opened Minton’s door and told him to “give it to him” and not to move or try to get out. Minton said he didn’t know what the man was telling him to give.

Because of an injury from a car accident several years ago, Minton is unable to fully turn his head to the left, and was unable to see the man’s face.

While Pappas was unloading groceries, she said Holloway bumped into her and she started walking back to the house. Then she said she heard gunshots and made eye contact with Holloway, “for a split-second,” before he and the other men fled in the van.

Law enforcement officers were able to locate the fleeing vehicle and began a pursuit with the aid of Air One, the Sheriff’s Office helicopter.

According to the report, the three males abandoned the van and fled on foot. The Sheriff’s Office was able to apprehend Holloway and John Headen, the driver, with help from a K9 unit, but were unable to track down the third person in the van.

Minton was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center where, according to the report, “he underwent emergency to save his life.”
