The Lady Renegades 12U team wins costume contest; Mariah Zirkelbach named athlete of the month; Cheerleaders win seven titles; plus, youth football coverage.

Doomp-a-di-doo: Costume contest goes to 12U

The Ormond Beach Lady Renegades 12U team took home top honors, Oct. 22, for their costumes at the National Softball Association's “Spooktacular Fast Pitch” Tournament. The team put aside their red, black and white uniforms for the tournament and dressed up as Oompa Loompas, with head coach Scott Volpe dressed as Willy Wonka.

Mariah Zirkelbach named athlete of the month

Seabreeze High School’s Mariah Zirkelbach was named the Ormond Beach Lion’s Club Athlete of the Month. Zirkelbach is a co-captain of the Sandcrabs volleyball team and a four-year varsity player. She also plays for the Atlantic Coast Juniors competitive club team and helps coach recreational league volleyball through the city, the same program where she got her start eight years ago.

Gimme a D! Cheerleaders dominate Pop Warner competition

The Pop Warner cheerleading team took seven first-place finishes at the Pop Warner East Coast Conference Cheer Competition, Oct. 20-21, at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center. The competition included teams from Volusia, Flagler and Brevard counties. The Sandcrabs’ top honors came in all four age groups in which they competed, two Grand Champions (teams with the highest score overall) and in the challenger division, for special-needs boys and girls of all ages. All 105 Sandcrab cheerleaders received a first place honor.

Ormond Beach Sandcrabs go 1-3-1 against DeLand

In its second to last game of the season, the Tiny Mites squared off against the DeLand Bulldogs. Troy Holloway, Cole Rivera, Jaylon Owens, Preston Jackson and Tyrese Hicks made great blocks to spring several long runs.

The Mitey Mite team trailed 13-0 at half but scored 19 unanswered points in the second half for a 19-13 win. Frankie DeAngelis and Jonathon Campbell ran for touchdowns, and Kyle Muffelletto added a touchdown reception.

The Pee Wee team won its first game of the season, 13-0, thanks to Nick Dash’s six tackles and Elijah Brown’s fourth-quarter interception.

The Junior Midget team trailed 16-0 in the fourth quarter, came back then ultimately lost, 16-14, after an extra point was blocked. Brett Cormier and Brody Loynd each had a touchdown catch. The Midget team also lost.

Pride goes 2-3 against Gainesville, varsity advances

The Pride Tiny Mites, Mighty Mites and Pee Wee teams all lost to the Gainesville Rattlers and will miss out on the the playoffs. However, they remain bowl-eligible.

The Pride J.V. team won, and will finish a rain-shortened game against the Williston Raiders, from earlier this season, in hopes of advancing to the championship.

The varsity team earned its seventh win of the season to remain undefeated. They’ll advance to the championship, Oct. 28, against the Daytona Beach Hurricanes, a team they beat 32-6 during the regular season. The championship will be held at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
