'Weight' a second: Girls with muscles

Celina Hart, Shari Chung, Erika Byrd and Alexix Raines won their respective weight classes when the Seabreeze girls weightlifting team competed Nov. 15 against DeLand.

The girls competed in the bench press, clean and jerk lifts.

The boys weightlifting team starts Jan. 18, after the Christmas break.

And the 'wrestle' is history

The Sandcrabs wrestling team competed in the Clash of the Titans meet Nov. 17 at University High School.

The varsity team had several Top 10 finishes, including Mike Sampson (fourth at 126 pounds) Kyle Cannon (sixth at 170 pounds) and first-time wrestler Zach Driscoll, (fourth at 220 pounds).

For the JV team, Zach Kometias (second at 126 pounds), Ryan Free (fourth at 132 pounds), Chris Whalen (third at 145 pounds) and Matt Kohler (third at the 152 pounds) had strong competitions.

The next meet is Dec. 1, at Jensen Beach High School.

Five Father Lopez athletes get collegiate

Shannon Cranshaw, a senior on the Father Lopez girls basketball team, signed a letter of intent Nov. 14 to play for George Washington University. Cranshaw verbally committed in September, after having decommitted from the University of Georgia.

Father Lopez had four other athletes sign with colleges: Erika Pifer committed to Samford University to play volleyball, Ian Farrell committed to the University of South Carolina Upstate for baseball, Ashley Folsom committed to the University of Southern Mississippi to play basketball and Simone Brown committed to Liberty University for basketball.

Athlete of the year: Anthony Campanella

Seabreeze senior Anthony Campanella was named the Daytona Beach Quarterback Club’s Scholar Athlete of the year.

Campanella ended the season with 14 receptions, 295 yards and five touchdowns.

Seabreeze sophomores stee-rike second place

Joey Juhasz, a freshman, finished second, out of roughly 240 Seabreeze High School bowlers, in a state bowling tournament earlier this month. Juhasz also finished as Volusia County’s top bowler.

The Sandcrabs also finished second in the Five Star Conference tournament, second in the district tournament and 16th in the state tournament.
