The Braves, an Ormond-based kid-pitch team, defeated the Athletics 4-2 to win the Mustang Kid-Pitch League’s championship game on Dec. 1 at the Nova Community Center fields.
George Scudiero was hot from the mound, giving up zero runs in the first two innings. Fellow pitcher Jaxon Wagers closed out the last two innings to win the game for the Braves.
The team, which was comprised of 14 kids between the ages of 8 and 10, finished the season at 9-1.
“Just watching them all play together and the friendship they formed was really neat to watch,” coach Ty Lohman said. “Just watching them from starting to field the ball and throwing to first base to now they’re stealing bases and getting the fundamentals down was really awesome to see.
“It was really neat to watch them progress throughout the season.”
Despite two losses, the Mainland girls basketball team is off to a good start to the season. The Buccaneers have jumped to a 4-2 record and are 2-1 in district play. The Buccaneers routed Pine Ridge 55-14 on Dec. 6 at Mainland High School and bounced back with a 74-37 walloping of rival Seabreeze on Dec. 9 at home. Freshman Isys Grady scored a game-high 15 points against the Sandcrabs. In addition, captain Dzhariya Hawkins chipped in 14 points.
However, the Buccaneers ran into a hot Flagler Palm Coast team led by star forward Skye Green. Green torched Mainland for 20 points and 23 rebounds in the Buccaneers' 56-44 loss on Dec. 11. Grady scored a team-high 13 points against the Bulldogs.
Two of the best girls soccer teams in the area, Flagler Palm Coast and Seabreeze, were set to square off in the first of their two meetings on Dec. 9. However, nearly an hour before game time, referees declared the field unsafe to play on because of excess rain the night before. As a result, the game was canceled.
According to FPC Athletics Director Steve DeAugustino, no makeup date has been scheduled yet. In addition, because the contest is a conference matchup, the game will have to be played some time this season.
However, the Sandcrabs improved to 9-2 with a 5-1 win at DeLand on Dec. 11.
After the boys team swept FPC and Leesburg 4-0 and 8-0, respectively, the Sandcrabs (8-1-2) picked up their first loss of the season in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Seminole on Dec. 11.
Mainland four-star defensive back John Huggins, who recently backed off his commitment from Florida State following head coach Jimbo Fisher's jump to Texas A&M, was visited by Florida Gators defensive coordinator Todd Grantham on Dec. 7. Huggins originally had an official visit to Nebraska on the weekend of Dec. 16 but has replaced it with a visit to UF, according to Huggins' Twitter profile.
