Ormond Beach’s coed softball league starts Aug. 19; also: YMCA announces low-cost exercise program and Carrie Purdy leaves Seabreeze to take over at Matanzas.

Ormond Beach coed softball starts Aug. 19

It’s time to dust off the cleats and stretch those hamstrings.

The city of Ormond Beach Leisure Services Department is offering its 21st-annual adult coed softball league, which will run from Aug. 19 to Nov. 14.

The league will be divided into two or three divisions based on the number of teams and experience levels. Each team will play a minimum of 16 games, and games are played Monday through Thursday, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, 700 Hull Road.

Game softballs and team awards will be given out. The team sponsorship fee is $540, and fees need to be turned in by Aug. 13.

Dive right in: Purdy leaves Seabreeze for Matanzas

Carrie Purdy, the former swimming coach at Seabreeze High School, has been introduced as the new swimming coach at Matanzas High School.

Purdy was the head swimming and diving coach at Seabreeze for six years.

Seabreeze High School football golf tourney: Aug. 3

To benefit the players on the gridiron, golf enthusiasts will whip out a different kind of iron Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Seabreeze High School Football Annual Golf Tournament, at the River Bend Golf Course.

Weber Air and Heat Technologies Inc. is presenting the four-person scramble, which will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m.

Cost is $75 per player, or $300 per team, and includes golf, range balls, food, proximity prizes and raffles.

Low-cost exercise available at YMCA

Volusia Flagler Family YMCA is now offering low-cost, group exercise through its EnhanceFitness program, for older adults.

The 16-week program, which uses light hand weights, stretching and other equipment, is free to all Y members and $25 for non-members.

The program is offered at the Ormond Beach Family YMCA 12:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Call 738-9622.

Tee it up: Halifax Urban Ministries golf tourney

Halifax Urban Ministries will host its sixth-annual Golfin’ 4 Homeless Prevention tournament Aug. 10, at the River Bend Golf Club, 730 Airport Road.

The format will be a best ball, 18-hole scramble with four-person teams. Cost is $75 per player. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.; the shotgun start is 8 a.m.
