Recharged and rolling: Green Wave soccer

The Father Lopez girls soccer team is back at full strength.

It took until the middle of December, but head coach Paul Beaudoin had his entire roster available to him Dec. 14 against Taylor.

“We played very well,” Beaudoin said. “The score was 4-1, but we dominated. We outshot them about 30-2.”

The Taylor win put the Green Wave at 8-2-2 on the season (as of Dec. 17), with two distinct games left on its schedule.

The Green Wave continue to play beyond Beaudoin’s expectations, and a healthy roster will be an advantage in the season’s final push before the playoffs.

“It should be,” Beaudoin said. “Especially when you talk about the game of soccer and how injuries can occur at any time. I feel very lucky and very confident that if someone gets hurt, someone will step up and fit in.”

The makeup game against Master’s Academy, which will be played in January, will test the the Green Wave’s healthy lineup.

“Master’s has some state cup players on their team and they’re very good at attacking,” Beaudoin said. “But defense-wise, if we can attack them, I think we might have the upper hand.”

Father Lopez will host a holiday tournament Dec 27-29, where the Green Wave will play Space Coast, Taylor and Crooms Academy.

Eye of the tie-ger: Seabreeze girls soccer goes 1-1

The Seabreeze girls soccer team went 1-1 Dec. 15, in the Julie Weber Tournament, in Orlando.

The Lady Sandcrabs beat Dr. Phillips Orlando 2-0, in their first game, with goals from Kaitlyn Marlett and Jenna Davis. Elizabeth Murray added an assist.

The Sandcrabs defense held Dr. Phillips to only three shots in the game, all saved by freshman Hailey Beach, while tallying 17 shots.

Seabreeze lost its second game 1-0 to Oviedo Hagerty.

You pick two: Maitland and Brown named athletes of the week

Malik Maitland, a sophomore on the boys basketball team, and Simone Brown, a senior on the girls team, were named Father Lopez’s athletes of the week last week.

Maitland averaged 16 points per game in Green Wave wins over New Smyrna Beach, Atlantic and Master’s Academy.

Brown, who committed to Liberty University in November, led the Green Wave to a 3-1 record while averaging 17.2 points and 11 rebounds per game.
