Track captain leads his village's people in YMCA run

The 'wave' we were: Girls soccer team overcomes injuries

The Father Lopez girls soccer team (5-1-2, as of Dec. 3) has exceeded head coach Paul Beaudoin's expectations, despite having to overcome early season adversity.

“We had two key players out with injuries,” Beaudoin said. “They're back, but now we have two more out. Three players have had concussions. We’re still not at full strength.”

Allie Lydecker and Madelyn Rayos, a freshman, have played every minute of every game this season, but they'll also likely miss time due to injuries.

Beaudoin said he’s never had a team suffer so many concussions in a season before.

“We’re above what I thought we’d be,” Beaudoin said. “There were a couple of teams we haven't beat in the past, that we beat. ... (Geneva has) always been a bone in our side and we took care of them, easily, two weeks ago.”

The reason his team has played so well, to Beaudoin, is simple: He has more players (eight) with club soccer experience than he’s had in the past.

“Any time I change a formation or have to move somebody around, they have the ability to do so,” he said.

Need a 'Pride'? Youth football team enters nationals

In their first game at the American Youth Football National Championship tournament, the Ormond Beach Pride trailed the Jersey River Plaza Chargers 26-21, with one minute left in the game.

Then, quarterback Denzel Houston lead the team on a 60-yard drive and ran in the game-winning touchdown with 12 seconds left.

Houston ran for three touchdowns and threw one to Nakeven Atkins.

The Pride played the Sev Thunder, from Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 5, to advance to the AYN National Championship game. A win put them in the championship game and loss put them in the third place game.

Bet you "scan't' do that again: Scantling snags 34 rebounds

Lady Sandcrabs basketball player Shakira Scantling recorded 34 rebounds in a 57-50 win Nov. 30, against New Smyrna Beach. Scantling also scored 15 points.
