Tournament golf scores, Father Lopez baseball drops first game of the season, and local soccer players make state Olympics-development team.

Four! River Bend Golf Club’s Quota Tournament

River Bend Golf Club held its Quota Tournament Saturday, Feb. 16, and the men’s results are as follows.

1st: Richard Fagan, Bob Morris, Roy Bittnet and Tom Gaynor - 167

2nd: Ken Osteen, Ron Strange, Emanuel Gregory and Ron Oddis - 158

3rd: Tom Kowalski, Larry Koss, Jerry Gundry and Charlie Cook - 156

4th: Rick Niemi, Rich Maselli, Ted Trainor and Ed Brownlee - 153

Trinity Christian tops Farther Lopez

The Father Lopez baseball team lost 1-0 to Trinity Christian Feb. 18, in its first game of the season.

Trinity Christian scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, and held the Green Wave scoreless on just four hits. For Father Lopez, Zach Hawk went 2-3 with a double. Joey Markus went 1-1 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.

The Green Wave committed two errors and gave up seven hits to Trinity Christian, who committed one error.

The Green Wave were scheduled to play a game Feb. 14, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, but it was canceled due to weather. The game against Hagerty will be rescheduled for a later date.

Olympic dreaming: Local soccer players have high hopes

Jordan Diverniero and Cari Davila were among the 48 players selected for the Florida Olympic Development Program soccer team.

Diverniero, 12, plays for Orlando City, and Davila, 13, plays for FC American, in Orlando. Both players will take part in training sessions with the rest of the Florida team in Alabama in April and June, before the program picks players for the Region III team.

The Region III team will be made up of players from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Taking his talents to Pennsylvania 

Father Lopez senior Tommy Roache committed Gannon University (Pennsylvania) Feb. 19, to play baseball.

Roache, an outfielder and pitcher, had a .300 batting average in 2011, while racking up 15 runs, 22 hits, five doubles and a .384 on-base percentage.

Green Wave keep rolling

The Father Lopez boys basketball team beat St. Francis 75-39 Feb. 19, to advance to the Regionals Finals. The Green Wave will play Providence 7 p.m. Feb. 23, at home.
