Seabreeze wrestling goes 3-2 at meet
In the Ray Hollingsworth Duals Dec. 8, hosted by Seabreeze High School, the Sandcrabs went 3-2, with wins over Melbourne (48-35), Liberty (76-12) and Pine Ridge (59-12).
The Sandcrabs lost their matchups against Lake Brantley (45-39) and Ocala Forest (45-34), who ended the day 4-1 and shared the duals title.
Seniors Merrick Sica, Kyle Flynn and Zachary Driscoll, along with sophomore Van Brown, went undefeated on the day. Driscoll recorded the quickest pin of the meet: nine seconds.
The next meet for the Sandcrabs will be Dec. 21 and 22, at the Lyman Holiday Tournament in Longwood.
Pride finish fourth in the nation
The Ormond Beach Pride varsity team ended its run in the American Youth Football nationals with a fourth place finish.
In the third-place game, the Pride lost 34-31, to the Missouri Wolverines in the game’s final seconds.
“(It was a) tough last-second loss, but we still finished fourth in the nation,” head coach Brian Colubiale said. “I truly feel we are the top team, but sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way.”
Denzel Houston continued his great season, throwing for three touchdowns, running in a score and returning a kickoff for a touchdown.
Nakeven Atkins was on the receiving end of two of those T.D. passes. Jason Colubiale caught the third.
“We were able to put Ormond Beach on the map,” Colubiale said. “Now, everyone at the nationals knows who Ormond Beach is.”
Colubiale said the team will be honored Jan. 8, by Mayor Ed Kelley and the Ormond Beach City Commission.
In their second game at nationals, Dec. 5, the Pride lost to Sev Thunder, from Phoenix, Ariz., 52-38, with a chance to go to the championship game on the line.
