A 24-year-old South Daytona resident has been charged with vehicular homicide after he crashed into a 73-year-old woman's car while street racing another car.

Erik Worthington could face up to 15 years in prison according to state law for the death of Mary Spanos, of Daytona Beach, who died at the hospital seven hours after the June 4 crash. Spanos' injuries at the time of the crash were believed to be non-life threatening, according to Worthington's arrest report, and she was transported to the hospital by non-emergency EVAC.

Ormond Beach Police initially reported that witnesses said Worthington was racing a blue Subaru four-door car north on Nova Road before colliding with Spanos, who was making a left turn onto North Nova Road from Shadow Lakes Boulevard. OBPD has identified the second driver, but has yet to release information as it waits from confirmation by the State Attorney's office, said Public Information Officer Keith Walker.

Witnesses told police that they saw Worthington and the driver in the Subaru revving their engines while stopped at the traffic light of North Nova Road and West Granada Boulevard. One witness who was at the Dunkin' Donuts drive-thru said they passed by her at what she estimated to be over 100 mph.

Worthington told police when he was first arrested that he didn't know the other driver, who was flicking hiim off and "brake checking" him up and down Nova Road. He denied racing the Subaru.
