Steve’s Famous Diner, on Nova Road, has its share of regulars. And many of them are veterans.

Christos Mavronas, 42, owner of two restaurant locations and son of the original Steve, opened the diner’s doors on Veterans Day to offer free meals to vets and their families — an annual Steve's Diner tradition.

"It was a huge success," Mavronas said. "We do it because, well, where would we be without our veterans? They helped us, they put their time in, we can help them too."

The event, which was funded by Giant Recreation World, served almost $15,000 worth of meals. According to Mavronas, that's double the size of last year's donation. The large number of people was partly because the Ormond Beach location was the only Steve's Diner hosting the event.

"I think that we want to continue to do it. Hopefully next year we will do it again," Mavronas said. "We want our community to know that we love and appreciate our veterans. We appreciate the hard work and sacrifice they made for us."
