Volusia County beaches may see a strong surf with dangerous rip currents, higher than normal tides and strong gusts of wind with rain this weekend despite Hurricane Teddy staying far off the coast, the county reported in a press release.

In response to the anticipated squally weather over the weekend, Volusia County's coastal division will remove all port-a-lets and trash receptacles along the beach by the end of Friday, Sept. 18. The press release states water may also be shut off to some coastal showers, and that the division will keep inspecting walkovers and ramps in case of erosion. Access points may be closed temporarily to address safety issues.

Vehicle access ramps may also be delayed on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19-20, depending on the mid-morning high tide and surf conditions. The county advises that people wishing to go to the beach this weekend should consider parking in an off-beach lot and reminded the public to swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower.

In case of thunder, beachgoers will be asked to exit the water.
