Sue Gum
1930-2022
Sue Gum passed peacefully at the Grand Traverse Pavilions Nursing Home in Traverse City, MI, on Friday March 18, 2022. She was 92 years old.
Born in 1930, in Upshur County, West Virginia, to James Garfield Wilfong and Martha Ellen (Miles) Wilfong of Buckhannon, WV. Sue, as she was known, grew up on a working farm with six other siblings. She is predeceased by four, her brother Karl; and her sisters, Irene, Wilda, and Jo. She is also predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Bayard Gum. Surviving relatives include her children Kenneth B. Gum of Traverse City, MI, and daughter Dana L. Wright of Ormond Beach, FL; their spouses Marilyn Gum and James Wright; her two grandchildren Zoe, and Zane Gum. Her sister Donna Jean Ours, and brother James Garfield Wilfong ll (wife Fran). Additionally, she is survived by sister Jo’s husband, Wayne Booth, along with several loving nieces and nephews.
Sue was married at age 18 to Bayard Gum in Buckhannon, WV. There she was employed at the High School and the Buckhannon Builders Supply. Via the Air Force, she and Bayard moved to Arizona, Florida, then Oscoda, Michigan where she was employed at Oscoda Manufacturing, and the Country Closet dress shop. She was also very involved with the Oscoda United Methodist Church. She enjoyed many friendships, golfing, boating, and social gatherings with their supper club organization. She participated in much outdoor life of northern Michigan with her family, and spent time traveling to Ormond Beach, Florida area as well.
We all miss her pleasant, engaging, and joyful presence immensely, and have so many stories to share.

Friends, family and acquaintances are welcome to attend a memorial service for Sue, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684. There will be a one-hour visitation prior to the service. There will be a private family interment in Oscoda, MI.
