If only the winter season would treat the Bucs as well as the summer has, in the past few seasons…
Staring in the face of a 7v7 championship loss to Vanguard, Mainland’s star quarterback Denzel Houston connected with Demarcus Adams for the game-winning touchdown as time expired with a 40-36 to repeat as Legacy Team Sales 7v7 Summer Showdown champions on Saturday, July 9, in Ocala.
With this championship win, which John Ivory, one of the owner of the tournament, referred to as the best championship game he’s ever seen, the Bucs will head into another season with a superior chance to reach the Class 6A State Championship, which has eluded them since their 2003 win.
In four of the past five years, Mainland has fallen to playoff rival Miami-Central in the postseason. Houston, the offensive MVP of this past weekend’s tournament, returns for his final season and hopes to repeat this summer magic on the biggest stage for a prep high school footballer.
“The truth is,” coach Scott Wilson said, “I just want to see a group of young men, who have worked so hard for something, be able to finally experience setting that goal and obtaining it.”
Knowing what this group of guys has borne the past few years, especially after witnessing their second-to-none work ethic, I’d love to see the Bucs eventually reach the title game. I often hear how teams have to go through growing pains before reaching their final destination. If that be the case, then the Bucs are due for a berth in the title game. But then again, it’s not up to me. They will have to get past a couple of teams to get there—and yes, that will probably include Miami Central.
