The qualifying period for the 2020 elections is now closed, and four out of five Ormond Beach commission seats are up for election on Nov. 3.
Zone 3 City Commissioner Susan Persis ran unopposed and is therefore considered re-elected. Her husband, Carl Persis, was also re-elected to continue representing District 4 in the Volusia County School Board. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, Volusia County Clerk of Circuit Court Laura Roth, Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis and Property Appraiser Larry Bartlett were all re-elected as well.
Here are the four local races to watch:
Current Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington will be running against Rob Bridger.
Partington was first elected to the commission to represent Zone 4 in 2003. He is an assistant public defender and division chief for the felony trial division for Florida's Seventh Judicial Circuit, and is a lifelong resident of Ormond Beach, according to the city website. If re-elected come November, he will be serving his third term as mayor.
This is Bridger's second time running for the mayoral seat, as he ran against Partington in 2018. Bridger is a U.S. Navy veteran who has lived in Ormond Beach since 1989 and worked for the state for 35 years before retiring in 2011, according to a press release. He served three terms as the HOA president for The Trails, and if elected, aims to invest in existing infrastructure and historic preservations, as well as protect the local environment.
Incumbent Commissioner Dwight Selby will be running against Tim Grigsby.
Selby was first elected in 2016. If re-elected, this will be his third term.
Grigsby filed for office on Thursday, June 11.
Incumbent Commissioner Troy Kent will be running against Ken Smith.
Kent was first elected in 2003. He is currently an assistant principal at Ormond Beach Middle School, and has served on boards like Ormond MainStreet and the Beachside Redevelopment Committee. If re-elected, this will be his eight term.
Smith is lifelong Ormond resident and owner of Wall-Y-World Gallery. He served as the regional president of the Antique Automobile Club of America. Smith advocates for small businesses and said in a press release that he would like to work on a roadmap to streamline the hurricane recovery process for these businesses.
Incumbent Commissioner Rob Littleton will be running against David Romeo.
Littleton was first elected in 2016. He owns and operates Go Ormond!, helping to educate high school students in mathematics and accounting, according to the city website. If re-elected, this will be his third term.
Romeo ran against Littleton in the 2018 race. According to his 2018 press release, he is a sales engineer at Miller-Leaman, Inc., and moved to Ormond in 1997.
