The city dedicated a proclamation to Tatum Gibbens; FAA grant accepted; Senior games registration; and Trader Joe's petition.

Mayor Ed Kelley proclaimed September as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month,” during the City Commission meeting Tuesday night, and dedicated the proclamation to 4-year-old Tatum Gibbens and her mother, Debbie.
Tatum was diagnosed with leukemia last October and began making trips to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando for treatment.
“She’s in maintenance at this point,” Debbie Gibbens said. “She takes chemo every single night at home. (She) takes a pill, swallows it all by herself. And she’ll continue that until January 2014.”
Gibbens added that Tatum still goes to Arnold Palmer Hospital once per month for chemotherapy treatments.
Kelley said the purpose of the proclamation was to raise awareness “to the fact that cancer remains the No. 1 disease killer of American children.”
Commission approves FAA grant for airport renovations
The commission authorized a grant agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration for renovations to the airport.
The FAA grant and a joint participation agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation will account for 98% of the $2,555,392 needed for the renovations, leaving the city with a $51,107 obligation.
The airport renovations will include relocating, rehabilitating and re-aligning three taxiways in addition to the construction of a new public-use heliport and a new compass rose.
Senior games opens for signups
The city of Ormond Beach is now accepting registration for the Ormond Beach Senior Games, which will run Oct. 19-27. The event is in its 20th year and has been a qualifier for the Florida Sports Foundation State Senior Games for the past 12 years.
The games are open to seniors 50 and older and include events like billiards, bocce ball, football throwing, golf putting, trivia and spelling.

Trader Joe's petition seeks 1,000th signature
A group of Ormond Beach residents is trying to convince Trader Joe’s to open a store where Food Lion, 101 E. Granada Blvd., used to be. The group wants residents to sign a petition, which as of Sept. 18 had 530 names, that it will send to the Trader Joe’s CEO.
