Gift card switcheroo
3:49 p.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard
Petit Theft. The victim said when he tried to use his gift card, it came back as invalid. He took it back to the store where he bought it, and after an investigation, it was determined that the suspect, who works in the automotive section, took the gift card from the car while it was being worked on and replaced it with the same type of card from the store.
The suspect then bought several items with the stolen gift card for a total of $103.31. He also used the card at other locations.
When questioned by the store’s loss prevention officer, the suspect said he used the card because he found it. He asked, “What are you going to do? Call the cops?”
The loss prevention officer answered, “Yes.”
The victim said he wanted to pursue charges.
Going on a beer run
11:08 p.m. — 600 Block of South Nova Road
Shoplifting. The victim said the suspect entered the convenience store and walked directly to the beer cooler. He grabbed an 18-pack of beer and ran from the store. He was last seen running down the street. He was inside the store for less than a minute.
Gift cards arouse suspicion
6:06 p.m. — First Block of Falls Way Drive
Fraud. The victim was contacted by a company that said he had overpaid on an item and needed to be refunded.
The victim was told to go to a website and credit the amount $299.99.
He was then contacted by the company saying he hit the wrong button and his account was credited $4,000. He was told to purchase the amount in Apple gift cards and send the information on the cards.
The employees at the store told him the purchase was strange and he should call police. There are no suspects.
Early workout
7:24 a.m. — 300 Block of West Granada Boulevard
Burglary. The gym employee found the front glass door smashed upon arrival in the morning. Front desk drawers were open, but no money was taken from the locked cash drawer.
There was a large rock by the smashed front door.
Surveillance video showed someone arrive on a scooter. Then the suspect, wearing a cap and a mask, walked directly to the drawers. He tried to pry open the cash drawer and opened the other drawers in an apparent attempt to find something to pry it open with.
After a couple of minutes trying to open the drawer, the suspect left with a safe. Video showed the suspect driving off on the scooter.
Early checkout
2:12 p.m. — 1600 Block of North U.S. 1
Theft. The motel operator suspected an employee in thefts. She had found several items stashed in the laundry room.
She later found the suspect with her car backed up to the laundry room and her car loaded with items. When confronted, the suspect jumped in her car and drove away.
Missing were five lamps, three pool chairs, four bed comforters and two umbrellas at a value of $589.75.
