The yearlong month of March

How can things change so fast, yet feel so slow?

Remember when we could go to the store and have our pick of toilet paper brands? Or when you sneezed and people automatically replied with a half-hearted, "Bless you," just to be polite, rather than a panicked side-eyed glance?

Yeah, it feels forever ago to me, too.

But really, it has only been three weeks since the first case of COVID-19 was identified in Volusia County. In those three weeks, "normalcy" has taken on a new meaning for us all. Some of us are working from home, some of us are not, and others have lost their jobs entirely. Schools are implementing distance learning. Instead of having family visit on the weekends, we schedule virtual visits using FaceTime or Zoom.

Last weekend, I even watched my childhood friend (someone I've known since she was 10 years old) get married through Zoom — a bittersweet moment because I knew how much effort she'd put into planning her dream 200-guest wedding that was no longer a possibility, and because it was a reminder that love really can conquer everything. And, it finds a way.

Is that cheesy? Probably, but I think we can all do with some uplifting messages in this weird time we're living in. The days seem both long and short at the same time, and more than once, I've looked at the calendar and thought, "It's still March?" Life seems to be inching forward at a caterpillar's pace, and it's draining.

But, it's also forced me to slow down; remember to find peace in the little things that make me happy after a long day of reporting the news. Do that at-home workout. Bake those cinnamon rolls. Watch that movie that's been in your Netflix list since last summer. Finish the book on your nightstand.

And breathe. Come Wednesday, March will be over.
