I had the privilege of attending a press conference at DME Sports Academy on Tuesday, June 26.

DME, which is located near the International Speedway in Daytona Beach, offers “top level athletic development training, life skill mentoring focused on personal excellence as well as team building and the realization of reaching ones goals,” according to the company’s website.

The academy trains primarily high school-aged athletes across a variety of sports, including basketball, volleyball, soccer and hockey.

While I was there, I took a sneak peak at the athletes working on their games with personal instruction from a coach. It was impressive, to say the least, and is an excellent way to develop one’s athletic ability. It’s quite the resource if you’re serious about your sport and can make the tuition work.

(Tuition for commuter residents costs anywhere from $15,000 to $19,500, with financial aid available.)

Other options for young athletes with a desire to play a sport in college include camps offered around town.

Recently, I also had the opportunity to sit in on a youth baseball camp in Port Orange. Students learned the fundamentals of the game and were able to hone their skills. They also received instruction from Atlantic High School’s baseball coach, Antwan Brown.

Most cities host similar events across a fairly broad spectrum of sports, and they hardly cost more than a small entrance fee.

Whether it’s a sports academy or a shorter camp in the summer, I would encourage young athletes to take advantage of what’s in your area. Time is short, and you won’t regret working hard to make the most of your talent.
