Troy Kent, city commissioner for Zone 2 since 2003, announced March 15 that he has filed to run for re-election.

He looked back at his time in office and to the future in an interview.

“I have been available to my constituents,” he said. “I have for 13 years held monthly meetings, called Coffee with the Commissioner, at my house, open to the public, and I have listened to what they said.”

As accomplishments, he pointed to his ideas to create a free fishing tournament for kids and to have monthly free movies at Rockefeller Gardens. He said he was proud that he opposed raising building height limits in the city several years ago when proposed by hotel developers.

He said he toed the line on property tax rates, keeping Ormond Beach one of the lowest in the county.

Kent said he considers both youth and senior citizens when making decisions. He is raising a 9-year-old son, and his parents live nearby.

“I always think about the elderly community, people like my parents, and also my son,” he said.

He wants his son to be able to get a “really great” job in Volusia County and live in Ormond Beach.

His goals for the future would be to keep tax rates low, continue to bring reuse water to the beachside and improve beach access by opening more beach approaches.

He said he approaches every problem with common sense and tries to solve it in the same manner.

Kent was a teacher for 16 years at Pathways Elementary School and now is a teacher on assignment in the dean’s office at Spruce Creek High School.

He has served on Ormond Beach MainStreet and is a member of Citizens For Ormond Beach.
