Sanford Olson, 55, was killed by gunshot early Sunday morning in his home at 7 Seabreeze Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea. After an investigation, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department has reported there were no findings of a criminal offense.

“While the official cause of death won’t be determined until the final autopsy report is issued, the Sheriff’s Office has no plans to file criminal charges in this case at this time,” Spokesman Gary Davison wrote in an email.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene after a resident called 911 at 2:52 a.m., saying her neighbor was banging on her door and asking her to call the police because she had shot her husband. Four minutes later, deputies began arriving at the scene of the shooting and found Olson lying on a bed inside the home with a gun beside him. He was pronounced dead at 3:07 a.m.

The victim's wife, 57-year-old Doris Barrells, had told her neighbor that the shooting was an accident. Sheriff's investigators said Barrells was fully cooperative with the investigation.
