On Tuesday, April 12, the Volusia County School Board appointed Rachel Hazel as interim superintendent for the school district. Hazel has agreed to serve in this role as the School Board finalizes its decision regarding the next permanent superintendent.

“My primary role during this time will be to make decisions that must be made immediately and gather as much information as possible to ensure the transition for our next Superintendent is a smooth one," Hazel said.

Hazel started her career with Volusia County Schools in 1996 as a clerk at the former Boston Avenue School. Hazel worked as a teacher and later had administrative roles as elementary assistant principal and principal. Hazel has served in several district positions as executive director of K-12 curriculum, chief academic officer of curriculum, curriculum & school improvement, and until recently, director of human resources.

Hazel is certified in educational leadership and mentally handicapped and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Central Florida and a master’s degree from Stetson University. She is currently getting her doctoral degree from the University of Central Florida.

“I am honored to be appointed Interim Superintendent, and I look forward to continuing to serve the students and families of VCS and guiding the district through this transition period," Hazel said.
