Volusia County Sheriff Chitwood injured in bike crash

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood was hit by a pickup truck Friday morning.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bike on Ponce Inlet around 8:50 a.m., Friday, Sept. 29.

Chitwood was transported to the hospital, where he was diagnosed and treated for a broken left hand, a possible ACL tear in his right knee and two fractured vertebrae. The sheriff also received sutures in his left knee. He was released from the hospital later on Friday afternoon.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado stayed at the scene after the crash. He was determined to be at fault, receiving a traffic citation for failing to yield by the Ponce Inlet Police Department.

According to a press release, "the sheriff is in good spirits and anticipates getting back to work as soon as he is released."
