City Manager Joyce Shanahan was named manager of the year by the Volusia League of Cities last week, at its annual awards banquet May 30, at the Riverfront Center of St. Demetrois Greek Orthodox Church, in Daytona Beach.

But she wasn’t the only Ormond Beach official recognized for standout service by the county.

Others city workers honored at the 2013 Distinguished Service Awards ceremony are listed as follows:

Mayor Ed Kelley, elected official of the year

Robert Carolin, for his work in the Parks & Recreation Department

Lloyd Cornelius and Gregory Stokes, for their work in public safety

Doug Wigley, as a volunteer in community sports

Millie Reda, as a volunteer in public safety.

Casements workers close out season

Fifth-graders from Pathways Elementary School took a field trip last month to The Casements, at 25 Riverside Drive, to tour the grounds and learn about its history.

A total of 100 children, teachers and parents attended and learned about the building’s place on the National Register of Historic Places, the life of John D. Rockefeller and the role residents had in rescuing the building and overseeing its renovation.

The Casements Guild also held its final meeting of the 2012-2013 season May 22, led by President Phyllis Lowry, who congratulated members for their work guiding facility tours six days a week.

Public works report

Urban Forestry crews removed a large Oak tree on Hand Avenue, and crews from the city’s sign shop relocated beach parking signs along State Road A1A.

Deteriorating grills have also been replaced at Central Park II, located at 601 Hammock Lane.

And Andy Romano Beachfront park got new, additional signage, as well as replacement sand, to fill in island areas around the park that were washed away during heavy rains.
