With about three weeks until the deadline to file for candidacy in the upcoming City Commission race, only six people — the five incumbents plus one opponent — have announced they are seeking election in the fall.
The qualifying period begins at noon on Monday, June 8 and will expire at noon on Friday, June, 12. The election is for all four commission zones, plus the mayoral seat. Will a primary election be held on Aug. 18? That depends if more candidates file for election in the upcoming weeks, as three or more would need to file for a single race.
Here is who we know is running so far:
Mayor
The only candidate at this time is the incumbent, Bill Partington. He was first elected to the commission to represent Zone 4 in 2003. If re-elected, this will be his third term as mayor.
Zone 1
Only incumbent Dwight Selby is slated to be on the ballot. Selby was first elected in 2016. If re-elected, this will be his third term.
Zone 2
This is the only race where the incumbent currently has an opponent. Troy Kent was first elected in 2003. If re-elected, this will be his eight term.
His opponent in the race is Ken Smith, lifelong Ormond resident and owner of Wall-Y-World Gallery. In a press release, Smith advocated for small businesses and said he would like to work on a roadmap to streamline the hurricane recovery process for these businesses.
Zone 3
Only incumbent Susan Persis has filed for this seat. She was first elected in 2018, and this would be her second term on the commission.
Zone 4
Incumbent Rob Littleton currently has no opponents. He was first elected in 2016. If re-elected, this will be his third term.
All outdoor basketball courts and sports fields are now open in the city of Ormond Beach.
Indoor basketball courts at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center and the indoor pickleball courts at the Nova Community Center have also been reopened. However, reservations are required for indoor court usage. Call Nova Rec a 676-3252 and SONC at 676-3231.
Volusia County Interim Attorney Mike Dyer could soon be permanently appointed to his position, as County Councilwoman Deb Denys made a motion to add an agenda item on the matter at the next meeting.
The appointment was not part of the May 19 meeting agenda; Denys brought it up at the end of the meeting during her final comments.
All vehicular beach access ramps in Volusia County were reopened on Wednesday, May 20, days ahead of Memorial Day Weekend.
About 2,300 vehicles each day utilized the previously reopened ramps on Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17. The county installed over 1,500 blue marker posts to facilitate socially distant parking.Beach Safety asks people access the beach in less-crowded areas.
