The wife of former School Board Chairman Al Williams, Dr. Kathy Williams has announced her candidacy for the board’s District 2 seat, to be filled in a Dec. 19 special election.

Before his death, Al Williams won a fourth School Board term, in an Aug. 14 primary. Kathy Williams has earned a doctorate in curriculum and instruction in education from the University of Illinois. She holds two master degrees, worked for the Chicago Public School District 34 years and has been an educational consultant since 2004.

“Although the circumstances surrounding this run are very difficult, I am encouraged because I will be able to utilize my 30 years of experience in education to not only continue Al’s good work, but more importantly, to serve as an advocate for the children of Volusia County,” Williams said. “There is a great need for student and teacher advocacy in our schools and I believe I am in the best position to offer that kind of support.”
