When 77-year-old Joe Doughterty was picking out a necklace for his wife's birthday, the cashier asked how old she was turning.
"16," he replied.
The cashier laughed and called him a pervert, knowing that his wife, Madalyn Doughterty, was a leap year baby and was actually turning 64.
"He really likes to tell people he's married to a 19-year-old," Carly Krajewski laughed about her friend's husband. "My husband hasn't gotten that savvy yet, but my little one likes that we're almost the same age. We'll be 11 and 13 together."
For most of her life, Madalyn Doughterty had only met one other person who she shared a leap year birthday with, until she met Carly Krajewski, her daughter's best friend.
Usually celebrating their birthday's on Feb. 28 or Mar. 1, both Krajewski and Madalyn Doughterty hope to make this year a special one, by finding other leap year babies right off the bat. The duo wants to visit the maternity ward at the Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center on Feb. 29 and bring the newborns little gifts to welcome them into the world.
"I don't know anyone besides Madalyn who's a Leap Year baby," Krajewski said. "So it will be exciting to see an actual baby."
