Tour de Palm Coast showcases Graham Swamp Trail

A small group of bicyclists gathered early morning Saturday, July 21, for the second-annual Tour de Palm Coast Bike Tour, leaving from the Graham Swamp Trailhead, which is one mile south of Palm Coast Parkway on the east side of Old Kings Road.

Though the tour, hosted by the city of Palm Coast’s Parks and Recreation, didn’t yield much participation, it did act as the introduction of new QR codes that have been installed along the trail to encourage bikers to connect and discover historical and geological facts.

The history
Old Kings Road, constructed in 1776, once acted as a major transportation route stretching from Georgia to New Smyrna. It served as a rout to and from what is now Graham Swamp. In 1782 Lt. Col. John Graham, of Georgia, traveled there and built a 20,000 acre plantation with a crop of swamp sugar cane. The plantation stood until the second Seminole War.

Today, the swamp provides environmental conservation and flood protection.
