The Pirate Theater, at Matanzas High School, was taken over Saturday by a group of talented teens for the second-annual Olympics of the Mind Competition.
The competition distinguishes itself as the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO), a youth initiative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, showcased by students with talents in music, poetry, dance, art and design, science and technology.
“It’s not just the athletes that need our support,” said Andre Maybin, who acted as the emcee for the performance.
The winners of the competition will represent Flagler County at the national competition, July 13-17, in Orlando. There, they will compete against other students for scholarships, awards and prizes.
The winners will be announced at the NAACP ACT-SO awards banquet 4-7 p.m. April 27, at the African American Cultural Society, 4422 N. U.S. 1.
