Handmade keepsakes seem to outlast everything else in my family. My mom still has the handprint wreaths my sister and I made back in the day, and they make their way onto a prominent spot on her wall every Christmas.

So when I found this recipe for salt dough online, I couldn't resist inviting my neices and their friend over for some keepsake-making.

Salt dough handprint keepsake
(makes 3 keepsakes)

What you need:
4 cups of flour
1 cup salt
Food coloring (optional)
Large mixing bowl
Water to moisten
cookie sheet
just a tad of oil
a small rolling pin or wooden dowel
a drinking straw
ribbon
paint (optional)

What to do:
In your mixing bowl, gradually blend flour and salt with water.

Lightly grease a baking sheet with oil, and then form and roll the dough out on the sheet. Once you have your form made, use the straw to make a whole before you have your kids emboss their hand print.

Dough will need to be thick enough to form the handprint. If dough is too thin, it will not work.

Place in a 150-degree oven for an hour or air dry for 24 hours.
