Scarecrows, snakes and flower pots were just a few of the masterpieces being made from clay at the Hollingsworth Gallery summer Art Camp this week. The camp, which is open to aspiring artists ages 6-12, has been an integral part of the gallery since its opening five years ago.

“I think it’s important to expose the kids to a lot of materials and teach them that you don’t have to have expensive stuff to make art,” said J.J. Graham, curator and owner of the gallery.

One project done in camp that touches on this concept was a collage created from magazine pages.
But not every project is right for each young artist. By giving students a choice of three projects, Graham hopes to foster each student’s creativity, by getting on their level.

“I try to be a bit of a kid when I’m teaching them,” he said. “Also, their honesty ends up being a good source of inspiration for me.”

To register to camp, visit www.hollingsworthgallery.com or call 871-9546.
